Victoria: Australia’s Compact All-Rounder
Victoria packs more variety into Australia’s smallest mainland state than seems fair: the laneway city of Melbourne, the limestone stacks of the Twelve Apostles, the penguins of Phillip Island, the Grampians’ sandstone ranges, the Yarra Valley’s wineries and the gold-rush towns of Ballarat and Bendigo. Everything is within a few hours’ drive of the capital, which makes Victoria the easiest state in Australia to explore properly in a short trip. This hub collects every Akedo Warriors guide to the state — start here, then dive into the region you are visiting.
Melbourne & Surrounds
Melbourne is where most Victorian trips begin, and it rewards slowing down. The laneways — Hosier Lane, Degraves Street, Centre Place — hold the street art, coffee and small bars that made the city famous, while the Queen Victoria Market, the State Library and the Royal Botanic Gardens anchor the centre. St Kilda brings the beach and the little penguins at the pier at dusk, and the Yarra Valley, an hour east, brings cool-climate wine and the Dandenong Ranges’ mountain villages. Our flagship Sydney travel guide shows the standard our city guides aim for, and Melbourne coverage follows the same pattern — where to stay, what to eat and how to get around without a car.

Great Ocean Road & Regions
The Great Ocean Road is Victoria’s signature drive and one of the great coastal roads on earth: Torquay, Lorne and Apollo Bay on the way to the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge, with the Otways’ rainforest behind the coast. Go for sunset if you can — the Apostles are at their best in low golden light, and the tour buses have mostly gone by then. Beyond the coast, the Grampians offer serious hiking and Aboriginal rock art, Wilsons Promontory offers the state’s best coastal wilderness, and the goldfields towns of Ballarat and Bendigo offer perfectly preserved Victorian streetscapes and mine tours. Phillip Island, two hours south-east of Melbourne, is the family favourite: the Penguin Parade at dusk, the Koala Conservation Reserve and the Grand Prix circuit.
